Beware “Local Records Office” Scam

If you recently purchased a new home, refinanced your mortgage, transferred real estate into a trust, or received a gift or inheritance of real estate, don’t be fooled by a letter from a Los Angeles company known as Local Records Office. This solicitation takes the appearance of a bill, demanding payment of $89 to receive a “copy of the only document that identifies [you] as the property owner” of your home. If your attorney or title company did not provide you with a copy of your deed, you can obtain this document from the County Recorder’s Office for a nominal fee.
